What is The Story Bible?
1 Corinthians 3:11
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Jesus is the foundation of life on this earth. As we study His word, we grow closer to Him (1 Peter 2:2). If there are books that God uses to help us gain an increased understanding of His word, they are obviously profitable in our individual spiritual walks.
The question this week is about one of those books called The Story. The Story is not actually a Bible translation. It is a single, continuous narrative of the Bible. It does not claim to be a real Bible translation and it does not attempt to take the place of the Bible. The Story is a book that focuses on the big picture of Scripture. It reads through like a novel, with 21 chapters covering the Old Testament and 10 chapters covering the New Testament.
The authors are Pastors Max Lucado and Randy Frazee. Although I do not look to either one of them for my deeper understanding of Scripture, I do have a healthy amount of trust in them both. While not the deepest of scholars, to my knowledge, they have both been theologically sound. I don’t recall ever hearing either one of them say anything heretical or Biblically incoherent.
Since The Story is not a translation of the Bible and is merely a condensed version put into novel form, it does have many parts omitted or condensed. These include the full story of Sodom and Gomorrah, the Sermon on the Mount, Acts, the book of James, and Revelation. I would recommend it being used as a supplement to normal Bible study like other Christian living books.
We should always desire God’s pure word above all other books (1 Peter 2:2). While The Story should never take the place of studying the actual Bible, many have suggested it as an engaging and exciting read. I hope that answers the question and I pray the Lord will bless your week as you grow in Him.
1 Peter 2:2
…as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow…
