As mentioned last week, a few people have asked about the notes I have on the Reasons to Believe series. These are the notes to the second sermon in the series: Reasons to Believe- The Bible.

Again, these notes follow along with the sermons, so they are best if you are able to listen to the messages with them. The corresponding sermons can be found at:

Remember, the series was necessary:

- To build our confidence in the reliability of God’s word
- To have answers for those that might question the Bible’s authority

Overall, as Christians, we need to be able to provide answers for our faith (1 Peter 3:15). In apologetics, they say to be a rock in the shoe of the skeptic.

Reasons to Believe: The Bible

Matthew 24: 35: Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

The Bible is detailed and specific:

- King Cyrus (Isaiah 44:24-28 and Isaiah 45:1-13)
- Alexander the Great (Daniel chapters 8-11)
- Up to Jerusalem (Up - Higher elevation)
- Down to Jericho (Down - Lower elevation)

1. Creation

Genesis 1: 1: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

  1. Second best document for creation events
    1. Enuma Elish, Babylonian Epic of Creation — 14 creation events listed; 2 correct (2 / 14 = 14%)
    2. All others - 0%
  2. Best document for creation events:
    1. Genesis - 10 creation events listed; all 10 correct AND in correct chronological order (Chance = 1 in 1 trillion)

2. Shape of the Earth

Isaiah 40: 22: It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers…

  1. Circle - (Heb חוּג - khoog) circle or sphere
  2. Date written - Circa 700 BC
  3. Science discovered - 3rd Century BC

3. Expansion of the Universe

Isaiah 40: 22: … Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

4. Weather

Revelation 7: 1: After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree.


What would cause the wind to stop blowing? The Sun would need to stop shining


Revelation 6: 12: I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.
