..I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.
When I was very young, my parents divorced. When I got older, I noticed that my sister and I could go to my dad's house sometimes and possibly get an extra Christmas present, etc. I also enjoyed watching sports with dad when I was with him.
However, we were with my mother 95% of the time. As I grew up I came to learn something: who is the person who made sure my sisters and I were in church? Who was the one who taught us about God's word? Who was the one that got us on the school bus in time? Who was the one who helped us with our homework? Who did my sisters and I watch Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman with? Who was it that woke me up at night to go to the little boys' room? Who comforted us at night when the coyotes would howl in the distance? It was my mother.
The mother, or grandmother in many cases, is a role that should never be diminished. That point can clearly be made from our passage above in 2 Timothy and I can relate. Timothy's mother and grandmother were both heavily instrumental in his spiritual health and well being. When my single, hard working mom needed help, my grandparents bent over backwards for us. We saw them all the time. It was our home away from home. God used my mother and both of my grandparents in my upbringing, much like Timothy's situation. Mothers, grandmothers, aunts, older sisters: You are loved. You are needed. Even when some try to act like they don't need you, the truth is, the world wouldn't be the same without you. Please keep doing what you are doing. Thank you and I pray that God will bless the mothers and the mother figures in our community and beyond.
As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you...
